The future of the Web and the impact on retail In previous columns I have discussed the impact of the Next Generation Internet, the Semantic Web, and the Personal Network on the retail-consumer interaction. These technologies are now being included in the planning for the next generation of the retail store. I would like now to discuss how these technologies might be combined to create happier customers for the retailers who implement them correctly.

Web 2.0 The next generation of Web applications are generally referred to as the Web 2.0. This October is the two year anniversary of the first Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco and we are already starting to see an impact on the type of applications predicted at the conference.

If you look back at the fifteen-year history of the commercial use of the Internet, we see an evolution in complexity, speed, usefulness and desirability of what people use the Internet for. The consumer started with 1200 bps e-mail and went through Internet Service Providers, bulletin boards, forums, gophers, ftps, the WWW, Mosaic, Netscape, Instant Messaging, Blogs, Voice over IP and MySpace on Broadband. more...
